ISO 27001 & 42001 Assurance Launch Roadmap

Updated: 25 July 2026

David Agyei (Lead Generation & Sales)  +  Prasanna Chinnasamy (ISO 27001 Technical & Implementation)

Introduction

This is the joint launch roadmap for David Agyei and Prasanna Chinnasamy into ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 assurance consulting. It sets out where the practice stands today, the three commercial openings available to it, a dated week by week plan to convert the nearest opening into paid work and a guard-railed path towards the furthest and most valuable opening: named G-Cloud supplier status for combined 27001 and 42001 public-sector programmes.

The practice splits along a clear line. Prasanna holds the ISO 27001 audit qualification and owns the technical and implementation side: the control mapping, the audit programme and delivery, and everything that has to be defensible to a standard. David owns lead generation and sales: naming and reaching buyers, proposals and pricing, the pipeline, and the publishing and outreach that gets the practice known. Every action below is tagged with its owner, DAVID or PRASANNA, or both where the work is genuinely shared. The split is this document's interpretation of the roles as briefed, not a finding from the source research, so treat the tagging as a starting point to correct rather than a fixed division.

The document is built from primary market research into UK demand, competitor listings and job-advert signals for 27001/42001 services, structured to a template David asked to mirror: position first, then a dated plan with done-when checkpoints, a decision tree, a commercial checklist, guard rails, a financial snapshot and a bottom line. Facts and figures carried over from that research are marked as sourced; everything built on top, such as the week by week detail, the calendar dates and the owner tags, is flagged as constructed.

Use it as a working document rather than a one-off read. Tick off each done-when item as it is completed; the bar for that item's own panel and the overall bar pinned at the top of the page both update as you go, and ticks are remembered in this browser between visits, so each of you ticking your own items works best from your own device. The five sections below can each be expanded or collapsed; they all start open.

1. The Opportunity

1.1 Where You Are Now

The research gives a clear structure. The practice's destination is the TOP opening: ISO 42001 readiness and internal audit for the UK public sector and defence supply chain, sold through G-Cloud and bundled onto ISO 27001, at £500 a day. The call on it is CAUTION. It becomes a GO the moment two things are true: a first public-sector reference, and security clearance or a cleared partner to deliver through. Neither is in place today, and going straight at the TOP from three projects and no clearance is the version that fails.

So the practice starts where it can start on Monday. The QUICK WIN: outsourced ISO 27001 internal audit and second-party supplier assurance for the roughly 3,300 to 4,500 UK organisations that already hold a certificate. Every one of them is required to run internal audits, and none of that work is gated by accreditation. It pays now at around £500 a day, Prasanna delivering and David selling. It builds the logged audit record the practice needs, and it is the correct on-ramp to everything above.

Position assessment

AssetOwnerBasisAssurance signalStatus
ISO 27001 audit qualification PRASANNA Existing background; the QUICK WIN needs nothing new Lets the practice earn immediately; internal audit is not gated by accreditation IN PLACE
Repeatable audit programme template and report format PRASANNA To build in Week 1; the only thing the QUICK WIN requires Turns the qualification into a productised, repeatable engagement TO BUILD
27001-to-42001 control mapping PRASANNA To build in Week 1, AI-drafted and hand-verified The sellable bridge to the MIDWAY gap analysis; 80% of 42001 adverts also cite 27001 TO BUILD
Logged audit record PRASANNA Accumulates from the first QUICK WIN engagements The record every higher route rests on TO ACCUMULATE
Named prospect list and warm pipeline DAVID To build in Week 1 to 2; the engine the QUICK WIN sells through Turns the qualification and template into booked, paying work TO BUILD
Public-sector reference DAVID PRASANNA Required to unlock the TOP opening One of the two gates on the primary call GATE, NOT YET
Security clearance or a cleared partner PRASANNA Required for public-sector and defence delivery The second gate on the primary call GATE, NOT YET
Comment. The two red rows are the whole story of the ramp. Nothing at the TOP opening pays until both are cleared, so treat every QUICK WIN engagement as a way to manufacture the first reference, David through sourcing it and Prasanna through delivering it, and start the clearance conversation (Prasanna's own sponsorship or a cleared partner) early rather than late.

1.2 The Three Openings and Your Ramp

The research lays out three openings at increasing distance. The honest sequence is to earn from the first while building towards the third.

OpeningWhat to learn or buildOwnerTime to readyRealistic earnings at beginner price
QUICK WIN
Outsourced ISO 27001 internal audit and second-party supplier assurance
Nothing new on the audit side; Prasanna is already qualified and adds a repeatable audit programme template and report format. David builds the named prospect list and outreach engine that sells it. DAVID PRASANNA Now 3 to 5 days per engagement at £500 = £1,500 to £2,500 each. Roughly 20 to 30 engagements a year for a working income. No accreditation gate, and every engagement adds to the audit log.
MIDWAY
Fixed-fee ISO 42001 gap analysis, sold first to the existing 27001 contacts
Prasanna finishes the 42001 course, builds the 27001-to-42001 control mapping and learns one AI stack properly (Azure AI, since 45% of adverts cite Azure). David sells it into the warm list. DAVID PRASANNA 2 to 3 months 5 to 15 days at £500 = £2,500 to £7,500 per engagement. Warm-list selling, so conversion is plausible without a brand.
TOP
Named G-Cloud supplier for combined 27001 + 42001 public-sector programmes
David writes the G-Cloud submission and bid; Prasanna covers the AI Playbook and pursues security clearance sponsorship. Both work the public-sector reference. DAVID PRASANNA 6 to 12 months, and only if clearance is achievable Multi-day programmes, but lumpy and slow to land. Public procurement cycles run months.

Ramp to a living income: 12 to 18 months, and only if the QUICK WIN line is running throughout. The honest sequence is to earn from internal audit now, use it to build both a logged audit record and a public-sector reference, then attack the 42001 gap from a position a buyer can actually score.

Portfolio reality. A portfolio of consultancy plus internal audit plus second-party assurance is realistic now, at roughly £500 a day, growing. A portfolio built on third-party certification audit days is not: not before 2028 at 42001 (one accredited body), and 12 to 24 months away at 27001 because of the logged-audit requirement. The two halves cannot be pointed at the same clients, because of the impartiality rule. Three projects is a start, not a portfolio.

1.3 Verdict and Wedge

AxisRatingBasis
EvidenceStrongCounted, in-region, primary: job-advert counts, live procurement listings, accreditation announcement. Weakest links are vendor-blog price claims.
Opportunity (incl. capturability)MediumDemand medium-high; ease of entry medium; capturability low to medium, gated on clearance and references.
RiskMediumImpartiality constrains portfolio shape; mis-selling risk on EU AI Act claims; demand policy-driven; margin exposed to platform erosion.
CompetitionVery low on target channel, high on general market5 listings vs 297, counted

Primary call: ISO 42001 readiness and internal audit for the UK public sector and defence supply chain, sold through G-Cloud, bundled onto 27001. £500 a day. CAUTION, with a clear compliance path. Becomes a GO with a first public-sector reference and clearance or a cleared partner.

Secondary: integrated 27001 + 42001 for SaaS scaleups, CAUTION (297 competitors, platform-substituted). Not now: third-party contract auditing for certification bodies, NO-GO at 42001 in the UK, one accredited body.

The wedge: the 297-to-5 supply gap on G-Cloud is one a newcomer can capture. The listing gap is observed and counted live; the purchasing gap is an assumption, since no award or spend data confirming unmet demand was found. Overall confidence: medium. Call: CAUTION, becoming GO the moment a reference and clearance are in place.

2. The Launch Plan

2.1 Phase 1: the QUICK WIN (27 July to 4 September 2026)

Week 1 is taken directly from the research's "zero to first deliverable" plan. Weeks 2 to 6 extend it into an activation sequence; treat those as my construction on top of the source.

Week 1: Foundation and First Deliverable (27 to 31 July)

Goal: stand up the QUICK WIN and build the MIDWAY artefact in the same week.

The core artefact (Mon to Tue)

Productise (Wed)

Free pilot (Thu)

Publish (Fri)

✓ Week 1 Done When:

Week 2: Capability and Network Activation (1 to 7 August)

Goal: build the capabilities buyers assume, and open 3 to 5 conversations.

✓ Week 2 Done When:

Week 3: First Paid Pitch (8 to 14 August)

Goal: submit your first paid proposal. Lead with the internal audit, which earns immediately.

✓ Week 3 Done When:

Weeks 4 to 6: Deliver, Document, Build the Record (15 August to 4 September)

Goal: win engagement #1, deliver, capture proof, and prepare the ground for TOP.

✓ Weeks 4 to 6 Done When:

2.2 Phases 2 and 3: MIDWAY and TOP

Phase 2: MIDWAY, fixed-fee 42001 gap analysis (from October 2026)

Goal: convert warm 27001 contacts into paid gap-analysis engagements at £2,500 to £7,500.

✓ Phase 2 Done When:

Phase 3: TOP, G-Cloud public-sector supplier (from 2027, clearance permitting)

Goal: become a named G-Cloud supplier for combined 27001 + 42001 public-sector programmes.

✓ Phase 3 Ready When:

Comment. Phase 3 is where the money is largest but landing is slowest and lumpiest, and it is entirely gated. Do not resource it until Phase 1 is producing income and at least one of the two gates is cleared. If clearance proves unachievable, the cleared-partner route is the only viable path to TOP and should be explored in parallel from the start.

2.3 Month 2 Decision Tree (September 2026)

ScenarioActionInvestment
Engagement #1 led to a referral Scale the QUICK WIN and start Phase 2 selling. Raise your rate towards £600 a day. Invest in templates and automation, not credentials. £500 max on tools and templates. Zero on credentials.
Engagement #1 was isolated (no referral) Invest in ONE of: a public-sector reference (pro-bono if needed); a marketing asset (one-page site plus a case study); or the 42001 course to reach MIDWAY sooner. £1,000 to £2,000 from engagement revenue, not from savings.
Client wants ongoing consultancy or implementation Negotiate a larger engagement. Keep consultancy and any future audit client lists strictly separate. Use the revenue to fund the ramp. £0. The client is funding your growth.
No engagement by end of September Stop and reassess. This is not a knowledge problem. Diagnose whether it is offer, market, pricing or reach, then adjust one variable. No further investment until diagnosis is complete.

2.4 Lead Generation and Sales Track (David's Focus)

DAVID This is the engine that runs underneath every week and phase above. Prasanna's side produces a sellable, defensible thing; this track is what turns it into booked, paid engagements. It is constructed for this version of the roadmap, built out from the brief rather than the source research, and should be corrected as real pipeline data comes in.

3.2 Guard Rails (Non-Negotiable Rules)

RuleWhy
Weight your time towards audit, not implementationAudit needs a named human to test evidence and sign an opinion; no platform supplies that. Implementation is the half software is automating.
Never ship an unverified mappingYour credibility is the product. One wrong control mapping ends a reference before it starts.
Keep consultancy and certification client lists strictly separateThe ISO impartiality rule. Breaching it disqualifies you from the accreditation route later.
Never present ISO 42001 as EU AI Act complianceMis-selling risk. 42001 certification is not conformity with the Act; scope it in writing.
No work without a signed engagement and 50% depositProtects cashflow and scope. A client who will not pay half upfront will delay the final payment.
Log every audit day from day oneThe logged audit record is the asset every higher route rests on.
Do not attack the TOP opening without clearance and a referenceGoing straight at it from three projects and no clearance is the version that fails.
Pitch within 21 days, by 14 AugustIf you have not pitched by then you are preparing, not launching. Preparation is not a business.

3.3 Critical Questions to Answer This Week

4. The AI Angle and Financials

4.1 The AI Angle (Comment)

This is the observation that should shape how you spend your hours. AI leverage on your work is real but asymmetric between the two halves of the business.

Leverage, on the delivery side. Drafting AIMS and ISMS documentation, mapping 27001 Annex A controls to 42001, generating audit checklists and writing findings reports are all tasks where AI meaningfully compresses the day count. If an engagement is priced at 8 days and delivered in 5, that gap is your margin.

Risk, on the same side. That is exactly the work the platforms automate and sell as a subscription. Compliance-automation vendors claim 90% or more of ISO 27001 controls can be evidence-tested automatically, and AIMS modules are already live on UK platforms at around £6,995 a year. Document production is the commoditising half of the job.

Net. For implementation, AI leverage does not clearly beat the commoditisation it invites; you would be using AI to compete on a task that software is eating. For audit, it does: an audit requires a named human to test evidence and sign an opinion, and no platform can supply that. Weight your time towards the audit side, which is also where your actual qualification sits.

5. Outlook

5.1 What Your Position Now Unlocks

AssetWhat it proves to a clientHow to use it in a pitch
ISO 27001 audit qualification You can deliver required internal-audit work today, with no accreditation gate "I run the internal audits your certificate already requires, and I assess your suppliers, now rather than in two years."
27001-to-42001 control mapping You can bridge an existing ISMS to an AI management system without starting again "I map your existing 27001 controls to 42001 Annex A, so you build on what you already have."
Logged audit record and first reference You are on the credible path to public-sector and higher-value work "Every engagement builds the audit record and references that let a public buyer actually score me."

5.2 The Bottom Line

The destination is the TOP opening, ISO 42001 readiness and internal audit for the public sector through G-Cloud, but it is gated on a reference and clearance the practice does not yet hold, so chasing it first is the version that fails. The route that pays this month and builds towards it is the QUICK WIN: internal audit and second-party assurance for the thousands of UK organisations already holding 27001. Prasanna builds the mapping and the audit template while David builds the pipeline; together, productise the gap analysis, run one free pilot, publish, then pitch. Earn from audit now, weight delivery time away from the half that software is automating, and let each engagement manufacture the reference the top opening needs.

The single most important action this week: PRASANNA build and hand-verify the 27001-to-42001 control mapping and the internal-audit template; DAVID line up one friendly 27001 contact for a free pilot.
